Instructor
STEAM:CODERS, a nonprofit that teaches underrepresented middle and high school students science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM), is seeking talented Instructors. Are you prepared to put your teaching skills to use for an excellent cause? If so, STEAM:CODERS is looking for experienced, dedicated, and talented people.
STEAM:CODERS offers classes (i.e., coding, robotics), after-school and Saturday mornings, in 8-10 week sessions. Instructors arrive prior to the start of class, to help set-up and organize the day’s activities. Instructors work with the staff to maintain a clean and safe classroom.
Instructors deliver a predetermined curriculum, supervise classroom activities, and work in conjunction with Assistant Instructors, Site Coordinators, and Volunteers to create a productive, fun, and enlightening experience for the students. This role requires a strong work ethic, a passion for K-12 STEAM education, punctuality, and responsibility. Candidates should possess a can-do attitude, patience, and resourcefulness. Prior experience working with K-12 students is preferred.
Candidates need knowledge of the content area, a dedication to creating an inclusive learning environment, and strong communication and interpersonal skills. Instructors will be responsible for designing and implementing courses (i.e., Computer Science, Robotics, etc.). Classes include, but are not limited to Scratch, Python, and HTML. We teach logic and critical thinking.
Responsibilities
- Teach a 3-hour Computer Science course, for 8-10 consecutive Saturdays or after school
- Develop, update and prepares class syllabus, lesson plans, presentations, and handouts
- Provide instruction for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels
- Ensures participants acquire the basic computer knowledge required for the class
- Nominate candidates for awards ceremony recognition
- Demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills using technology
Qualifications
- A minimum of one year teaching experience and/or relevant STEM work experience
- Content competency and enthusiasm for subject area required
- Demonstrated effectiveness working with K-12 students
- Desire to teach with technology and improve technological skills
- Excellent classroom management/teaching skills; openness to new teaching paradigms
- Experience in collaboratively developing curriculum and project based learning classes
