Assistant Instructor

STEAM:CODERS, a nonprofit that teaches underrepresented and underserved middle and high school students Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM), is seeking Assistant Instructors. Are you prepared to put your teaching skills to use for an excellent cause? If so, STEAM:CODERS is looking for experienced, dedicated, and talented people.

STEAM:CODERS offers classes (i.e., coding, robotics, etc.) on Saturday mornings and after school, in 8-week sessions. Assistant Instructors are required to review curriculum for weekly classes, help set-up, organize class activities, and work with the staff to maintain a clean and safe classroom.

Assistant Instructors will collaborate with Lead Instructors to deliver a pre-determined curriculum, supervise classroom activities and work with the Site Coordinator and Volunteers to create a productive, fun, and enlightening experience for the students. This role requires someone with a strong work ethic, a passion for K-12 education, punctuality, and responsibility. Candidates should possess a can-do attitude, patience and resourcefulness and experience working with K-12 students. Additionally, they should have the ability to help cultivate an inclusive learning environment, while exhibiting strong communications and interpersonal skills.

Candidates need academic knowledge in computer science, robotics and/or math. This role will help design and implement the curriculum. Classes include, but are not limited to coding (i.e., Scratch), robotics and math, creating apps and problem solving. We teach students logic and critical thinking!

Responsibilities

  • Teach a 3-hour Computer Science course, for 8 consecutive weeks, Saturdays or after school
  • Assist in Preparing class syllabus, lesson plans, presentations, handouts and other materials t
  • Provide instruction for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
  • Ensures participants acquire the basic computer knowledge required for the class
  • Nominate candidates for awards ceremony recognition
  • Demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills using technology

Qualifications

  • A minimum of one (1) year teaching experience and/or relevant STEAM work experience
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with K-12 students
  • Excellent classroom management/teaching skills; openness to new teaching paradigms
  • Experience in collaboratively developing curriculum and project based learning classes
